"The "men in the middle" attacks are potentially more harmful because they are an active form of attack. This means that the attacker can pretend to be a trusted user of the network and send information that seems to originate from that user. This form of attack is based on the ARP mechanism of the Ethernet network. In fact, this hacking technique is also known as ARP spoofing. The ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) mechanism maps IP addresses to MAC addresses. In an Ethernet network, the source computer must know the MAC address of the destination computer before any conversation can occur between the two. In order to find out the MAC address of the destination network station, the source sends an ARP request, asking the MAC address that corresponds to the specified IP address."
