Christopher "Kupe" Kuperman, a guest writer for the [H] from way back, shares his most recent OCing experience with us. "While many [H]’ers are well versed when it comes to new steppings, I am sure there are a few of you that are wondering exactly what we are talking about. To cut to the chase, every now and then Intel makes subtle (but sometimes quite important) improvements to the physical construction of a particular line of processor. Each time they make a production change they will label it with a new “stepping” code. It’s a bit like Windows 98 and Windows ME; same basic package, but with some “improvements”. In the case of Intel they usually make the changes so that: (a) they get higher quality higher speed processors from the production; (b) remove bugs and; (c) obtain a higher ‘yield’. (Yield is sort of like planting 10 seeds and getting 10 plants instead of 8.)"
