Using LEDs As An Alternative To Neons

"After thinking a while, I whammed my head against the wall in my room because I'm kinda dumb not to figure this out sooner. I have a modem, a Diamond SupraMax V.90 USB Modem and yes it's a USB modem. There's no power adapter for the modem, yet the modem still lit up and work, so there's certainly voltage coming through USB ports. I whipped out my blue LED (I like blue, that's why!) and start poking around the USB cable to my modem and found out that there is certainly voltage going through the USB ports.."
