"According to the IDE interface specification, the absolute maximum length of any IDE cable is precisely 18" in length. This applies to ATA33, ATA66, ATA100, and yes even Maxtor's upcoming ATA133 specification. The maximum cable length you're meant to use for any ATA interface - any kind of modern IDE drive - is 18", according to the official specification. ATA66 and above also have the additional limitation that any IDE cables cannot be any shorter then an absolute minimum of 10" in length"
