By now, love them or hate them, most people have seen or at least read about the P4 line of processors. You know the one, the processor despite its size, uses a radiator out of a Cadillac to cool it. The technology that has been used in the current line of P4’s is based on a Socket 423-pin, and a 0.18-micron core. While the new 2Ghz chip shares the same 0.18-micron process technology as its slower brethren, it also comes in a new pin out called the Socket 478-pin. Even though the older P4’s and the new ones share the same basic technology, the reason that Intel has made the move to this new platform is to pave the way for the 0.13-micron process technology that is coming soon, and because it’s cheaper for them to produce this way. By making the change now, Intel can spread the cost of this migration to the 0.13-micron based cores over a longer period of time.
