BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - Longing for a good night's sleep, an Indian man is auctioning off what are being touted as the world's longest fingernails.
Shridhar Malkaji Chillal, 61, hasn't cut the nails on the fingers of his left hand since he was 16. The five of them together now total almost 20 feet in length.
Chillal arrived Saturday at the beach resort of Pattaya, 45 miles south of Bangkok, to show off his fingernails at the Ripley's Believe It or Not museum. He then put them up for Internet auction and is planning to cut them off and send them to the highest bidder.
"He has never had a good sleep at night since he started growing the nails as he fears they may tear apart," Paithoon Maneethorn, a Ripley's spokesman, said in a telephone interview. He said Chillal, who lives south of Bombay in the town of Pune, was recognized in the 1980 Guinness Book of Records as having the world's longest fingernails.
Maneethorn said Chillal hopes to see a bid of more than $23,000 for the nails before the auction ends Tuesday. There had been no bidders yet as of Saturday afternoon.
