"One thing you should check for is the flatness of your core, as this plays a huge roll in the heat flow between the two surfaces. If one surface has dips in it they will be filled by the thermal compound, which is quite a poor conductor, even though using it will vastly improve the heat flow between two surfaces. The idea is to use as little as humanly possible, as the thermal compound is intended to fill in the microscopic crevices of the two surfaces. The way to check this is to hold it up to the light and see if any shines through. (sorry for the blurriness of the picture, but you get the idea)"
