Fake Athlons continued.... - FrostyTech.com Fake Athlons continued....

Insane posts the latests on the saga of the tampered Athlons - due somewhat to AMD being unable to fill orders...
The fact of the matter is that RTV Computers Pty Ltd purchased their Athlons along with many other resellers from Western Australia's biggest distro who purchased them from Australia's Official Authentic AMD Reseller. RTV is in no way responsible for this and I can assure you that a purchase from RTV is a worthwhile purchase but somehow all of this has slipped from under our noses. The story is that due to the mass shortage some weeks back, this official distro sourced the CPUs from locations other than AMD (like Hong Kong for example) and ended up with what now seems to be hundreds of modified 500 and 550 parts. The following has occured:
  • 550MHz Athlons with 600 and 650 cores with 3.6ns cache modded to 600MHz and 650MHz
  • 650MHz Athlons with 650 and 700 cores with 3.6ns cache modded to 700Mhz and 750MHz
  • Resistors moved and replaced to change multiplyer lock
  • Fake Serial numbers on case and on PCB
  • Top of SECC Case repainted and engraved with new markings
  • PCB modified
  • Thermal Goop on Cache all messed up (A GOOD SIGN TO LOOK FOR) Shows the heatplate has been removed before (for soldering).
  • Damn good cover-up!!!
