"Microsoft's IntelliEye uses a Digital Signal Processor chip which processes at around 18 million instructions per second which in tandem works with a small digital camera inside the mouse... Using a extremely bright red LED, the digital camera (inside the mouse) takes around 1500 snapshots of the surface (that the red LED lights up) each second, and basically compares to see which way the mouse is moving. As long as there's some detail for it to look at (precise optical sensor detects motion on hundreds of surfaces, including wood, plastic...) it tracks accurately and smoothly..."
