"Satellite Internet, the high speed internet technology that can give whole continents the benefits of a broadband connection has progressed very rapidly in the last year. More and more companies are jumping onto the satellite highway, offering millions of people broadband access, especially in Europe.
In Europe, the satellite ISPs are all using an open technology standard, DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting), which is probably the only reason satellite internet is the success that it is today. With closed, custom technology, a customer will have to buy everything off the satellite ISP, who can charge way too much for a card compatible with their service. The DirecPC service in the US is a perfect example of this, and users even have to get a custom dish to get the service, all from the one company, who are probably overcharging for the service."
