Since the Dynatron Model S uses a rather small fan, we don't expect it to be really that much of a noise maker - and it isn't. The noise the small heatsink produces is largely from the air moving between the many skived aluminum fins. To listen to this heatsink, simply click on the pair of headphones pictured below.

That small fan really turns out to be the weak point of an otherwise really well made heatsink. With so little air moving through relatively dense fins, the Dynatron Model S can fair no better than just below the performance curve set by the stock Intel socket 478 cooler. We would have expected the Model S to do a little better than that, and I think with a slightly larger fan it will be able to jump a head.

Two degrees were all that separated the Dynatron Model S on the 100W test from the stock Intel socket 478 cooler. While the underlying technology and techniques used on the Model S are very good, the fan really holds the entire heatsink back in terms of performance.

The machined base plate was great to see, and if you aren't intent on using something like arctic silver as the thermal compound you'll probably be pleased to see that the white thermal compound comes pre applied to the base - making it ready for instantaneous installation. In the end, we'll have to say, good cooler design and construction, bad fan choice.
