Before installation of the MC462-A Rev1 could begin, we had to completely remove the motherboard from the case. Unless the case is built in such a way as there are access holes behind the socket, this is absolutely necessary. It's a bit of a pain if you computer is already put together, but on the bright side, it's a perfect opportunity to look for dust bunnies, and clean out existing heatsinks or powersupplies of dust.

From below, only four small nuts are necessary to hold the MC462-A Rev1 in place. The nylon nuts ensure no trace leads on the PCB are damaged by the tightening. Depending on how large the holes are, some step washers may be used to keep the stand-offs centered in the hole. It is a small touch, but in the event the computer was moved, it could help prevent side ways motion of heatsink which may scratch or damage the core.

With the four brass stand-offs in place the motherboard can be mounted back into the case and we could proceed to the next step which was mounting the actual heatsink. We recommend applying a small amount of thermal paste to the core just to ensure a good conductive path between the two surfaces when they mate.

Each of the four mounting screws was assembled with its' washers and spring and placed into the mounting hole of the copper base plate. The screws were easily lined up with the brass standoffs and one by one in a crisscross pattern, the screws were slowly tightened. This tightening of the opposite screw, and then the opposite of that is to help ensure the heatsink is not being seated on the core at an angle because one side is too tight, while the other too loose.

As the metal portion of the MC462-A Rev1 was now firmly mounted to the Tyan KTA motherboard, we dropped on the large Sanyo Denki fan and screwed it on.
