Vantec FCE-62540D Heatsink Review

Abstract: When we first got this cooler we were a little taken back by the sheer size of it... When we plugged it in we knew by the sound of the fan, that the FCE-62540D meant business.

What the grill doesn't tell you about the power of this little 60mm fan, the noise sure does. This is a high RPM fan that moves a lot of air down into the 20 fin extruded aluminum heatsink design.

This is not a short heatsink, which means that for some of you there is no way you'll be able to fit it inside of your case. At just over 80mm in height, your case had either better bit big, or you're gonna be cutting holes here and there to get it to fit.

The 20 fins are attached to a base which is 5.4mm thick. This promotes good heat flow throughout the entire base of the heatsink. Good heat flow from the area in contact with the processor core to the rest of the heatsinks' mass can mean the difference between a good heatsink and a hunk of aluminum.

Without the fan attached its a bit easier to see how the clip Vantec use is situated. By not having to cut out a channel for the clip directly above where the core normally sits, Vantec assures at least a marginal increase in performance over older configurations.

Also note the nice thumb lever for the clip - it does a good job making clipping a lot easier.

At first glance we were a bit weary of the base of this extruded heatsink. And true to form when we tested it with a straight edge it did prove to be slightly concave. A minimal amount of lapping would make it perfectly flat.

About the only fault we can find with the the Vantec FCE-62540D is with the base not being very smooth or perfectly flat. It may be a small thing, but it can effect the performance of a heatsink by a few degrees.

Anyhow let's take a look now at how this heat sink stood up to the venerable Super Orb on the Frosty Synthetic Temperature Test platform...
