Looking down the frontĀ of the CH5-5K12 you can see the many aluminum fins which provide the bulk of its cooling power. The bottom quarter of the heatsink remains open.
The back of the heatsink illustrates how this isn't just any old heatsink design. the two heatpipes rise up from the thick copper base and carry heat along with them up into the cooling fins.
Peering down from the top there are four points where the heatpipes come out from the aluminum shroud. Each of those copper pipes brings heat energy away from the cpu and disperses it across the many aluminum cooling fins.
Through this little hole in the side of the CH5-5K12 fits the clip. We found that it can easily fall out if the heatsink isn't attached to a socket as there is no means really holding it in place within the heatsinks' body.
The clip itself is rather stiff to use, but once engaged ensures that the heatsink will not come free and rattle around inside a computer.
Even though the base is thick copper and practically perfectly flat across the base, Coolermaster opted to stick on an aluminum and graphite covered thermal pad. During our tests we found it worked much better when the thermal pad was removed, averaging about one degree cooler.
