Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The Cryorig H5 Ultimate heatsink stands 160mm tall and ships with a single 140mm PWM fan that draws power from a standard 4-pin PWM fan header. Four, 6mm diameter nickel plated copper heatpipes pass through a 108mm tall aluminum fin stack, spaced 30mm apart. The roughly 40 cooling fins swaged to the heatpipes and are spaced ~2.5mm apart. Each fin is stamped from ~0.4mm thick raw aluminum and features a square-tooth pattern on the leading edge (see image above).

The H5 Ultimate's fan is firmly held in place with a pair of spring-wire fan clips that have small thumb tabs for convenience. Rubber bumpers stuck to each corner of the fan frame serve to insulate the plastic from rattling against the metal cooling fins. A second set of fan clips is supplied, which is always important. The bottom-most cooling fin is elevated 35mm above the socket, really minimal motherboard component clearance. Removing the plastic bottom bezel would bump this up to 42mm clearance.

Note the asymmetry of the heatsink base plate in relation to the tower. Rather than being centered on the body, it's shifted towards the leading fin edge to better allow the heatsink to fit between memory slots on motherboards where DIMM slots straddle the CPU socket closely.

Four heat pipes are soldered to a nickel plated copper base plate that measures 38x42mm and is roughly 2-6mm thick. An extruded aluminum base cap helps distribute the clamping forces from the metal mounting bracket. The top of the heatsink is capped with a plastic bezel for esthetics.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineer's straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axes.

The nickel plated copper heatspreader on the base of Cryorig's H5 Ultimate heatsink measures 38 x 42mm in size and 2-6mm thick. The metal has a smooth machined surface finish. Surface roughness is at or better than ~32 microinches. Compared against an engineer's straight edge, the base of the Cryorig H5 Ultimate is very slightly convex in the direction perpendicular to the heatpipes.

The slight convex curve of the base is visible in the pattern left by thermal compound squeeze out after being installed on Frostytech's synthetic thermal test platform.
