Reeven Ouranos RC-1401 Heatsink Review
Reeven Ouranos RC-1401 Heatsink Review

Abstract: What's particularly interesting about the Reeven Ouranos heatsink is not the number of heatpipes or the fact that it's yet another 'tower heatsink'... but that Reeven's thermal engineers have decided to use a combination of 8mm and 6mm diameter heatpipes in concert.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

A single 140x140x25mm PWM fan is supplied with the Ouranos heatsink, though an extra set of wire fan brackets are included. The 160mm tall heatsink incorporates six heatpipes, four 6mm diameter and two 8mm diameter. The aluminum fin stack stands 120mm tall, 143mm wide and 70mm deep. Each stamped aluminum fin measures 0.3mm thick and is spaced 2.0mm apart from the next. The bottom-most cooling fin is elevated 38mm above the CPU for motherboard clearance.

Note that the body of the Reeven Ouranos is asymmetrically located over the heatspreader which makes contact to the CPU. The leading edge of the aluminum fins is flush to the copper base plate on one side and the trailing edge of the fins extends ~20mm out the other side. The two 8mm diameter heatpipes are centrally located, flanked by a pair of 6mm diameter heatpipes where there is generally less heat from the CPU below. The nickel plated copper heatspreader on the bottom of the Ouranos heatsink varies from 3mm to 6mm thick. The springy wire fan clips feature small finger grabs, which is always good to see.

The top of the Reeven Ouranos heatsink is covered with a name plate that covers the holes punched in the aluminum fins, for a more finished appearance. Between the fan and aluminum fins is a modest 4mm plenum. The nickel plated copper heatspreader measures 38x44mm.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineer's straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axes.

Reeven's Ouranos RC-1401 heatsink features a 3-6mm thick copper heatspreader which is likely soldered to the six heatpipes. The base has a very smooth surface finish, with surface roughness approximately 16 microinches or better. According to the straight edge, the base is concave in one axis and very slightly convex in the opposite axis.
