360° View - Coolermaster Gemin II S524 Heatsink

The smokey grey translucent 7-bladed 120mm PWM fan on the Gemin II S524 spins at 1800-800RPM and draws power from a 4-pin motherboard header. With the fan removed the holes for attaching 120mm and 140mm fans is visible. Note that some aluminum fins go all the way down and contact the copper CPU base plate. Each aluminum fin measures 0.2mm thick and is spaced 1.5mm apart.

The Gemin II S524 heatsink is 105mm tall, with 47mm clearance below the main fin stack. A section of fins ~35mm wide is soldered to the 6mm thick copper base plate and tops of the five 6mm diameter heatpipes. Heatpipes are spaced 16mm where they intersect the thin aluminum fins.

The nickel plated copper base of the Coolermaster Gemin II S524 heatsink measures 37.5x37mm in size and ranges from 3-6mm thick. The four machined threaded holes around the heatspreader are for the mounting brackets, these attach with really tiny screws for some odd reason.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The nickel plated copper base plate of the Coolermaster Gemin II S524 heatsink has a machined finish with a surface roughness of approximately ~32 microinches. The surface is smooth with a slight ridge texture from the tool and perfectly flat in both axis.
