Thermalright SLK-948U Heatsink Review
Thermalright SLK-948U Heatsink Review

Abstract: The Thermalright SLK-948U is an oldie but a goodie. This 635 gram chunk of copper is still a relevant heatsink however, resembling something akin to a metallic Toblerone with copper fins.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The Heatsink Fan:
There are a variety of fan sizes which can be used with the Thermalright SLK-948U including; 64mm, 70mm, 75mm, 80mm, and 92mm. The low noise Zalman fan is 92mm in size. Depending on which fan you opt to install on the SLK-948U, there are different types of wire clips to choose from. The wire clips slide into one of two holes punched into the fins which hold the fan retention clip assembly in place. Since the wire clips lock into the screw holes there is no easy way of mounting a wire grill over the fan itself. The black frame which surrounds the copper heatsink is used to mount the cooler to the motherboard.

Heatsink Side A:
At the center of the large copper fin section is a Toblerone shaped triangle of copper (32mm wide at base, 14mm at top) which forms the base of the Thermalright SLK-948U heatsink. The center of this base is cut away 7mm so that a spring tensioned clip can pass through. When the heatsink is locked in place this spring clip applies pressure to the heatsink. Note that the wire clips are held in place by small holes punched into the copper fins themselves - quite an ingenious method!

Heatsink Side B:
The copper fins are spaced 1mm apart and measure approx. 0.4mm thick. The copper fins have been soldered to the copper base at the heart of the Thermalright SLK-948U, and to keep the fins in line at the outer edges there are interlocking tabs. The entire heatsink stands just over 45mm tall without a fan.

Heatsink Base:
The copper portion of the base measures 32x64mm in size. The black mounting hardware surrounds this, and the various holes conform to different K8 and P4 socket form factors. Surface roughness is on the order of ~32 microinches, which is considered very good. The copper is machined perfectly flat, and is pretty smooth. The copper cooling fins extend 13mm or so which means exhaust air from the fan above will be directed down towards the processor itself, further cooling the toasty chip down.
