360° View - Scythe Samurai SCSM-1000 Heatsink

The Heatsink Fan:

The fan is 80x80mm in size but the heatsink will only accept one 70x70mm large at the most. A fan duct makes up for the decreased foot print, and elevates the 1300-3400RPM fan about 30mm above the copper fins. There is no fan grill to prevent stray wires from entering the blades per say, but since the fan is inverted in the frame the motor supports make up for one. The fan draws power from a 4-pin molex connector which is tied into the fan speed controller directly. An RPM signal wire is provided to plug into the motherboard CPU fan header.

Heatsink Top:

The fan is firmly attached to a stainless steel fan shroud and fan duct. The copper fins which reside below have shaped edges to improve turbulence and decrease resistance to air flow. The adaptor adjusts from the 80mm fan footprint down to a 70mm dimension, over a 30mm height; with a fan rotating at just 1300RPM we're not so convinced that this is a good arrangement.

Heatsink Side A:
The fan is supported 30mm above the tips of the copper fins. The base of the heatsink measures 61x66mm, large enough to fit into both AMD and Intel heatsink retention frames.

Heatsink Side B:
The copper fins stand 32mm tall, 83mm long. The copper base plate is punched out from a sheet of the material to a thickness of 5mm. The copper fins are soldered to the base of the heatsink.

Heatsink Base:

The copper base has a sanded finish which results in a wavy surface. The surface roughness is equivalent to about 32 microinches. A 1mm undercut provides clearance for the socket cam arm of older Socket A/462 processors.
