FrostyTech.com Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Results based on readings from a 38x38mm copper interface die with 125W heat load on the Mk.II Test Platform. Thermal Test values for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperature at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

125w thermal test (°c) noise level (dba)
*heatsinks are ranked according to the 125w thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

in the above reference list we can see the results from the frostytech mk.ii synthetic temperature platform stressing the ekl v8 heatsink with a 125w heat load at both high and low-speed fan settings. according to the rise above ambient temperature results for those tests, it is clear that the ekl v8 heatsink operates quite well when there is sufficient airflow from its 110mm diameter fan. the noise levels produced by the ekl v8 heatsink at the fans' full 2200RPM speed are somewhat high (57.5 dBA), but relatively good compared to some adjacent thermal solutions.

As a low noise heatsink the EKL V8 does not perform very well with its fan running at just 500RPM. There simply isn't enough airflow moving through the tightly packed aluminum fins to reduce the temperature to a satisfactory level. Instead, we are left with a heatsink solution that maintains a rise above ambient temperature of 44.9 C°, which is not especially impressive. Considering the fin pitch of the EKL V8, these results are hardly surprising however.

The blue LED's are a nice gimmick for the EKL V8 heatsink, and as far as AMD Athlon64 processors are concerned, the unit handles heat loads well when its fan runs at stock speeds. The only real problem we see with the EKL V8 heatsink is its clear plastic fan shroud; this part of the heatsink comes loose easily, and isn't held in place particularly firmly. furthermore, with even a small bit of fan vibration the plastic shroud can begin to rattle a little.
