FrostyTech.com Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Results based on readings from a 38x38mm copper interface die with 125W heat load on the Mk.II Test Platform. Thermal Test values for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperature at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

125W Thermal Test (°C) Noise Level (dBA)
*Heatsinks are ranked according to the 125W Thermal Test results column (rise over ambient temp.). Low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. For reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12V) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

Testing heatsinks which have fan speed dictated by a sub-motor mounted thermistor can be problematic. If ambient temperatures do not rise above the threshold for the sensor, the fan's speed does not increase. In much the same way, if a computer is crunching data and the processor is running hot but ambient case air temperatures are low, the heatsink's fan will not alter its speed. This can lead to overheating for the sake of lower fan noise because the thermistor is not reacting to the temperature which really matters most. Conversely, users with computer cases have high ambient temperatures (the result of poor airflow) may suffer from excessive noise because the heatsink's fan is running at full speed when it's really not necessary.

In any case, as a high powered AMD Athlon64 heatsink the Cooljag SFO-H (68YC) performs very well. On the synthetic test platform it achieves an excellent rise above ambient temperature result of 23.6°C with the fan spinning at full speed (60 dBA).

However, with the fan at its lowest RPM, the Cooljag SFO-H (68YC) is clearly not the best low noise heatsink on the market. The cooler maintains a rather high rise above ambient temperature of 39.8°C, indicating that the fin design works best with a sustained flow of air moving through its skived copper fins. Where noise is not an issue this heatsink performs great, so long as ambient case temperatures are high enough. The real world effectiveness of the Cooljag SFO-H (68YC) is thus quite unpredictable, and that is something any potential end user should be mindful of.
