Curious about what we had on hand to do this installation? Well most items were fairly standard, the drill bit as you might expect, wasn't.....

  • 1/2" Chuck hand drill
  • Diagonal wire snips
  • 16" long 5/16" masonry bit
  • 100' spool of Cat5 Ethernet cable
  • 100 pack of zip ties
  • 30' extension cord
  • 8' aluminum ladder
  • Pack of RJ-45 wall jacks
  • Small Robertson screwdriver
  • The drill bit

    Conclusion:

And that's it. We tested each of the connections to make sure everything worked, and thankfully it did! With some careful planing and a few precautions, installing Cat5 in our test house was pretty straight forward. All in all the entire procedure took us about two hours to do. With the wires now running neatly to the respective rooms along the outside wall, the baseboards and hallways were clear of bright blue cable. With a few simple tools and one long drill bit just about anyone can carefully drill through a wall and run cable safely out of the way.
