Abstract: Bearing close resemblance to the Prolimatech Megahalems Frostytech tested a few years back, the Eclipse IV heatsink is a bifurcated-tower cooler from heatsink manufacturer 'X2 Products' a brand offshoot of Spire Corp. The Eclipse IV heatsink is rated to a maximum cooling capacity of 220W by its makers and at first glance has the gravitas to back that claim up.

FrostyTech Mk.III Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Intel Core i7, Extreme Edition class heatsinks tested at a 200W heat load.
Results based on readings from a 38x38mm copper interface die with 200W heat load on the Intel version of the Mk.III Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

*heatsinks are ranked according to the 200w thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

frostytech's most recent synthetic thermal test platform stresses Intel socket LGA2011 and LGA1366 compatible heatsinks with a 200W heat load. Additionally, because the AMD Integrated Heat Spreader and Intel LGA2011 IHS both measure ~38x38mm, these test results can be directly extrapolated to AMD processor scenarios.

With a 200W heat load applied by the Intel LGA2011/1366 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, X2 Products' Eclipse IV heatsink yields a very good temperature test result of 19.1°C over ambient, with both fans spinning at full RPM. Decreasing the speed of the two 120mm PWM fans to 800RPM results in test temperatures rising steeply to 28.9°C over ambient, while noise output falls to a very quiet 34.6dBA.

Ultimately, X2 Products's Eclipse IV heatsink performed very well on the 125W AMD and 150W Intel synthetic thermal test platforms. The results were quite good on the 200W Intel synthetic thermal test platform, but the slew of all-in-one watercooling systems clearly edged it out.

The Eclipse IV heatsink uses plain and simple wire fan clips which make it easy to swap out 120mm fans should you wish to... and you might.

Although the supplied fans performed well enough, the unconventionally short fan power leads were more an obstacle than a convenience during our testing... I have no idea what X2 Products was thinking in this respect.
