FrostyTech Mk.III Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Intel Core i7, Extreme Edition class heatsinks tested at a 200W heat load.
Results based on readings from a 38x38mm copper interface die with 200W heat load on the Intel version of the Mk.III Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

200w thermal test (°c) noise level (dba)
*heatsinks are ranked according to the 200w thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

With a 200W heat load applied by the Intel LGA2011/1366 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Noctua NH-D9DXi4-3U heatsink yields a satisfactory temperature result of 34.9°C over ambient at stock fan speed (2000RPM / 43.2dBA).

Adding a second NF-A9 fan to the front of the NH-D9DXi4-3U heatsink improves performance nicely; test temperatures drop to a more average 27.7°C over ambient, though noise output does increase to 47.7dBA.

As anyone reading this Frostytech heatsink review already knows, there aren't a whole lot of lower noise heatsinks compatible with a 3U server chassis to choose from...

The Noctua NH-D9DXi4-3U is quite compact and offers satisfactory thermal performance in it's single fan configuration with minimal noise output. The heatsink does seem to suffer a bit on the cooling surface area front, but adding a second fan helps even things out a little. If your 3U chassis can support an extra 25mm in cooler length, we recommend installing a second 92mm fan to the front of this heatsink right out of the gate.

Otherwise, where 3U compatible heatsinks are required for lower noise Intel Xeon cooling, the Noctua NH-D9DXi4-3U heatsink is well worth considering. It may very well be a much quieter solution than the stock rack-mount chassis heatsink.... rack mount heatsinks are rarely, in our experience, designed with low noise cooling in mind at full load.
